Sun Tolerance

In our experience the majority of hostas will tolerate a sunny situation providing they are kept well watered.  As a very general rule blue leaved and white veriegated leaved plants thrive better in a shady area whereas gold - green leaved plants thrive in full sun.  Moisture at the roots is the key here, particularly with the large leaved varieties such as H. ‘Sun and Substance’.  Whilst this plant turns a beautiful gold colour in full sun it can burn in the drying winds of high summer.  Those plants in a sunny position can be helped by heavy mulching in early spring.  Click on plant name for detailed information.
