Whilst these size definitions may seem very exact, in practice the leaves of a mature Hosta clump may vary enormously. These size definitions are most helpful when comparing the relative leaf size of one plant to another. Please remember that even a miniature Hosta can, in time, grow into a large clump!
To assist you in your choice of Hosta we have selected a range of plants in order of the resistance to slug and snail damage and their tolerance to sunny situations.

In 2008 at the American Hosta Society convention the miniature hosta criteria was changed slightly from a leaf area of 3.5sq inches (22sqcm) to 4.0sq inches(26sqcm). The leaf blade also should not exceed 4.5inches in length and therefore there is no need for a third criterion for clump height. This enabled those hosta which were marginally too large under the old criteria to be classified as miniatures. However, there will still be those hosta which exceed the miniature status in size yet still require the care and growing conditions of miniatures. In future these are likely to be reclassified as ‘very small hosta’.
